What do you do when your nine month old son wakes up with blood in his ear and on his bed sheets? That is the question I had to ask myself this morning when Declan woke-up crying for mama. Not knowing what to do, I panicked, of course! I called my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, and my own sister and the conclusion was that he probably has an ear infection. With an appointment already made to see the pediatrician for his cold symptoms I took him in for yet another symptom as well. The doctor confirmed that Declan has not only one but TWO ear infections. Poor guy! He has had a cold for about 16 days now and I should have noticed the signs but I knew nothing about ear-infections. He was twitching last week so we stopped giving him Tylenol for his cold, thinking he was having a reaction to it. Little did we know that the twitching was due to his ear-infections. We have also gone swimming which may have added to the pressure in his ears. Oh the pain he must be in! Now, back to the doctor's visit...He gave Declan 2 shots of antibiotics in each leg instead of oral medicine because it relieves the pain and symptoms faster (possibly withing 24 -48 hours). I have to take him back tomorrow to make sure the antibiotics are working and he may still prescribe some oral drops if the healing is a little on the slow side. I feel so helpless. All he wants to do is sleep or cuddle with me. He doesn't want to play with his toys or his sister and this is very abnormal for him. He is like a different baby and all I feel is sadness for him.
The nurse weighed Declan but did not measure him. He is 20 lbs 6 1/2 ozs now. Just from looking at him standing up I can tell that he is about 3-4 inches shorter than Maya. They are just about the same size, it's crazy! Declan has grown like a weed!
Jeremy is off playing poker at his friend's house tonight so I am tending to the kids. They are both in bed and Maya just woke-up crying for some peculier reason. I think I will have the doctor look in HER ears tomorrow too, just to make sure she is okay! Her cold is lingering a little too so I just want to be safe. Please pray for the kids and pray that Jeremy wins lots of money tonight. The babies need a new pair of shoes!!!

it is so sad when they are sick. you just want to take it from them and onto yourself. my little shep got a double ear infection when he was just 3 weeks old. that scared me to death.
just give them lots of love and cuddles, they'll be back to normal before you know it!
Ear infections are horrible. Here in Newfoundland kids can get a booster shot that helps prevent 99% of ear infections. Needless to say, both my kids got more than enough and Zach had to have tubes in his ears at 10 months. So I know how scared you felt this morning and how stressful it is knowing that your baby is in pain and there is absolutely nothing you can do. It sounds likeyou have a great doctor who doesn't want to take chances. I am sure that things will get better soon and I will hope too that Jeremy wins it big.
I know how awful ear infections can be. Isabelle had 5 ear infections in 4 months last winter and it was absolutely terrible! Zoƫ seems to get them too. I have learned to ALWAYS get their ears checked when I take them to the doctor just to be safe and I always get both of them checked. I hope Declan starts feeling better soon. Poor little guy.
