A Cozy Family Weekend

A wonderful festive weekend was had by all. On Saturday, we rose early to travel to a nearby farm to buy our Christmas tree. Jeremy thought that 45 degrees (7 celsius) sounded pretty cold so I bundled the kids into their snowsuits, mittens, hats and boots. By looking at them, you would think that we were getting ready to go skiing. Declan looked like the little kid from A CHRISTMAS STORY - "like a Tick ready to pop." Soon after we arrived on the Tree Farm, the sun came out and the kids were much to hot so I removed their coats, mittens and hats and they seemed to have a really great time roaming about.

We settled on a beautiful 9 foot Douglas Fir tree that turned out to be a lot bigger once we got it into our house. Jeremy had to trim the bottom of the tree because the branches were touching the floor, but somehow we both seemed to misjudge how much to trim and now there is a big gap under the tree. It's almost empty enough to have Declan stand under it without ducking. All the more room for presents I suppose.

I always find it exciting to decorate the tree. Perhaps it is because I am reminded of the crazy drape-tinsel we had as a child. Or maybe it is simply because I am reminded of the wonderful friends and family who have given us the beautiful ornaments over the years. Every year I get a little emotional when I see my very own BABY'S FIRST CHRISTMAS 1978 ornament. I can't help but think about how much my parents must have loved me for keeping it looking so beautiful over the years. Christmas is a time to remember the love and happiness that has guided us into adulthood. (Sometimes I wish I was still a kid though, just so I could get that piece of chocolate from the advent calendar.)

We took the kids to the Sherwood Santa Claus parade and tree-lighting on Saturday night. They seemed to have a really great time. This was my first time experiencing an American tree-lighting ceremony and it was quite a show! Everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance in unison right before they lit up the tree. It was so great to see how patriotic everyone is - even at the busiest time of the year. (I suppose I should really learn the Pledge now that I am a permanent resident:)

.....now the Children are nestled all snug in their beds....napping the day away.

I wish we had a decent place to cut trees down. We would like to do it again but it was a tree disaster the year we tried.
