It's difficult to know where to begin when writing about the biggest day in this nation's history. Most people can recall where they were when the news rang loud and clear of an event happening that will live on in history (i.e. 9-11 Terrorist Attacks, The Columbine Massacre, The Assasination of JFK...etc.). Today I was at home, in my own living room watching the story unfold right before my eyes, and my children's eyes. Perhaps it was not the most interesting thing on television for my children to watch, but when I saw Maya glance at the screen and say "Barack Obama" I got chills. Not only was I witnessing this historical moment, but so was my daughter. I took the opportunity to explain to her exactly what was happening. Sure she couldn't pronounce Biden's name, but seeing her try so hard to understand this special inaugural moment was enough to make her mommy proud. Seeing Declan clap after every musical performance was enough to remind me that there is more meaning in today than just politics - there is a new found excitement and hope. Hope that one day our children will share the same opportunities as their cohorts and our new President. We no longer have to WONDER if equality would ever exist in this country because we are all witnessing it in action today.
And now, even as a Republican at heart, I want to congratulate President Obama on making this a day of hope and peace in our nation. May each day bring with it a sense of renewed strength and may it bring our people closer together through the joining of hands.
The 44th President of the United States of America
